If I were the Sauk County Sheriff’s Department, I wouldn’t be as eager to mention short-term increasing crime rates, because it focuses attention on something the criminal justice experts have known for a long time, which is that spending more on law enforcement doesn’t necessarily increase safety or reduce the crime rate and a one year change in crime rates doesn’t make a trend.
